Second Meeting Minutes

Industry Projects

Second meeting minutes

Date: 8/2/15 at 1pm
Present: Jamie Wyatt, Clea Hauser, George Overington, Mia Blakeney, Amy Horner (minute taker)

Aim:
-    Amend film idea and decide on final elements while thinking about how feasible it is to do.
-    Decide on Production Manager.
-    Pitch preparation, who will be the main speakers.
-    Review presentation.

George shows us the brief synopsis of our idea that he has written up. We when through it and exactly what we wanted, now we just had to decide on the final main and sub categories within our film.

Main Categories:
-    Graffiti
-    Street Dance
-    Live music performance
-    Street performers
-    Art
-    Theatre

Subject Cutaways:
-    Skating
-    Pole
-

Everyone will have research to do on the different subjects, thinking about shot types, locations and the activities they can do. Start to look for people or friends that could be in the film.

Production manager is Amy Horner.

The main speakers that are confident to present are Jamie, Clea, George and Mia who will be talking briefly about her Animation ideas. Everyone will have to be ready to introduce themselves and say what they are doing.

Gone through the PowerPoint, adding information, considering colour scheme and font in order to appeal to Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival.

Result:
-    Idea and synopsis has been finalised.
-    We all have our own research to be getting done for the pitch and the development of our idea.
-    We will be doing test shots on campus on Monday 9th (meeting at 9pm, Lancaster House.)
-    Editing scheduled for Tuesday 10th (meeting at 1pm, Editing suite 6.)
-    PowerPoint to be ready for Wednesday's 11th practice pitch (2pm, Third floor Silverstone)
-    Any changes to the pitch or presentation will have to be done before Friday's pitch at Brighton Dome.

Animation Inspiration/Research

When coming up with and developing ideas, we assigned each of our group different roles.

Although for the most part we will work collaboratively as a group, there were certain areas which wee more suitable to be led by certain members.

As I am the only member of our group with experience with animation, I would be in charge of this part of our creative project.

We plan to use animation within our short promotional film to relate to each of the creative examples used, and involve a different sort of artistic element to each.

We would like to use animated symbols to relate to the subjects which will be used, for example a love heart, with possibly hand-drawn elements.

As the group ember in charge of animation, I have started to look for inspiration for this part of our project within music videos:

The first example of a music video which I found inspiration from was MNEK - Wrote A Song About You. This music video uses animation in the form of brightly clouded lines, shapes and words, which are constantly in motion.

Although I am not sure if these block colours would fit best in our promotional film, I really like the movement of these animated elements, how they seem to flow around the screen and the artist and how they move in time to the beat of the song.
I also really like the way the words are written and disappear, although any hand drawn element of these animations looks like it was done digitally by using a computer mouse rather than a pencil or pen.

The next example of a music video which I found inspiration from was A Day To Remember - All I want. This music video uses animation in the form of text and doodle-like images, which appear on the screen as if they have been roughly drawn on.

I really like the hand drawn element of the animation used here, although for our promotional film this may need to be presented in a slightly more refined way. The words appearing on the screen also have a very punchy affect to them, which may also not be so appropriate in some instances, however I really like the textures used and the rough marks also included, as if they were slight pen smudges on the screen. However there does seem to be limited interactivity between the animations and the events happening in the video.

The final example of a music video which I found inspiration from was Mino - I'm Him. This music video uses animation in the form of smooth text and images which interact with Mino.

One of the things I like most about this style of animation is how it looks like light, in the fact that it is slightly transparent and using rainbow colours of the spectrum. I think that this could be a useful quality to include within the animation element of our film as light is also to play quite a big part.
I also really like the fluidity of the animated images, and the way they will often 'spill' as a way to appear and disappear.
The interactivity of these animated elements is also a very important element: even though Mino raps in another language, the animation used symbols to illustrate what he is conveying to the audience in a unique and creative way.
However, I am not certain of how difficult this style of animation will be to create, or how long i may take. Although as a group we are striving to crate our short promotional film to the highest standard possible, punctuality and time keeping is also incredibly important.

Initial Ideas

As a group, we decided to take a somewhat literal approach to the idea of Brighton as "a city where art never sleeps" and film our promotional video at night, showing various creative and artistic aspects of Brighton.

Our initial inspiration was taken from a video called Night Stroll (which can be viewed at http://vimeo.com/69949278 )

The opening shot really stood out to us as something we may like to use within our promotional film, and other similar shots in this film could be recreated well around Brighton, in a more artistic manner, for example of graffiti around town.

Some examples of artistic and creative expression and symbols of Brighton we may include are:

  • LGBT
  • Street art
  • (Circus) Performers
  • Chinese new year
  • Dance
  • Children
  • Family event
  • Freerunning
  • Skating
  • Cycling
  • Busking
  • Pole

We also really liked the use of light and animation in this video. Light would be an important part of our short film to incorporate he exciting night time creativity of Brighton, and animation would be an interesting way to incorporate another use of art.

Another aspect that we would like to include in this short promotional video is of a vice over of a poem, either written by ourselves or by creative individuals or children involved in Brighton Festival, which would highlight emotive and positive descriptions of the city, relating to the "love letter to the city" idea suggested by Brighton Festival.

Our film would be about 4 minutes long, including credits.

First Meeting Minutes

First meeting minutes

Date: 5/2/15 at 1pm
Present: Jamie Wyatt, Clea Hauser, George Overington, Mia Blakeney, Amy Horner (minute taker)

First meeting since finding out who our group is and the brief we will be working towards.
Our Aims:
-    Talk, get to know each other. Find out each other's skills and weaknesses.
-    Our own interpretation of the brief, and our ideas.
-    Decide on a idea, start writing a synopsis and looking for similar work as inspiration.
-    Discuss the roles that we would like to do within our production.
-    Prepare to present our idea to our class on the 6/2/15.

Brief 5: "Art never sleeps"
Ideas:
George: Idea is related to the o2 priority sports advert, the idea to achieve something similar to this adverts style. It was fast paced, featuring a range of different sports. However within our video we would need a range of art and culturally relating elements.
Clea and Jamie: Using the Vimeo video 'night scroll' to show a scroll through the city, this can show that Brighton is the same during the day as at night. We also really liked the animation that runs through the video, this could help to illustrate the art and culture within the city.
Amy: Similar to Clea and Jamie's idea but maybe add a time lapse to illustrate a contrast between the daytime and the night time.
Mia: In the brief it says that the video should be like a "love letter to Brighton." Maybe use a poem to illustrate the love.

Final Idea: Taking the main idea of a scroll through Brighton city at night but having the art and culture coming through different elements within the short film. We are also going to be keeping the idea of a poem/ love letter to Brighton, maybe as a voice over. (Have to remember to include how important Brighton festival is, but we can bring this up in the poem.)
-    Poem by William Blake about London, idea for our own poem (needs further development.)

Potential Elements:
-    Art
-    Music
-    Seafront
-    Alternative
-    LGBT
-    Dance
-    Skating
-    Graffiti

Job roles
George: Communications officer and Lighting
Jamie: Director
Clea: Camera Operator
Mia: Animator and Co-Editor
Amy: Co-Editor and Sound

Result:
-    The PowerPoint has been started, headlines written so we know what to research and expand on before our pitch.
-    Next step: We are ready for our lesson tomorrow and to gather feedback from our teacher and class.
